Frequently Asked Questions
-
A copyeditor checks the writing on a line-by-line/word-by-word basis, whereas a proofreader checks the writing letter by letter.
Proofreading involves checking for errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling and formatting. It is the final stage of editing before a document is published or submitted. Proofreaders focus on correcting mistakes and ensuring the text is free from errors.
Editing involves a more in-depth review of the text. Editors not only correct errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling, but also focus on improving the overall clarity, coherence and consistency of the writing. They may also suggest revisions to improve the flow and structure of the text.
While I completed an editing course, I am solely a proofreader so your text should have been edited and preferably typeset before coming to me for a final proofread.

Professional proofreaders are trained to adhere to specific style guides and editing standards, ensuring that your writing meets industry standards and is of the highest quality.
While your auntie may be great at spotting typos, a professional proofreader can offer a more comprehensive and professional level of editing that can help elevate your writing to the next level.

I have experience in proofreading a wide range of genres, both fiction and non-fiction.
However, I do not proofread academic texts, dissertations or early years.

I subscribe to the Oxford English Dictionaries for British English. This means I have access to over 1,000 years of the English language, as well as quarterly updates.
I use the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for American English.
Also on my desk are well-thumbed copies of The Oxford Dictionary for Writers & Editors, and the style guide New Hart’s Rules.
-
No, I do not use Artificial Intelligence (AI).
While AI tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly can be valuable tools for many, it is not a substitute for human judgement and expertise.
Human proofreaders bring a level of critical thinking, creativity and understanding of language that AI cannot replicate.

If I am to typeset your manuscript, I require a professionally edited manuscript as a Word doc, the preferred book size and the ISBN.
I will also need any images which are to appear in the book, as JPEPs at a resolution of 300 dpi. These must be images owned by you, whether created by yourself or stock images you have purchased. Please indicate where these images are to appear within the text.
If I am proofreading your manuscript, ideally it would have already been typeset so I will need the final typeset PDF. Alternatively, I can proofread a Word document.
-
I do not; each book I typeset is unique.
I typeset each book from scratch on Adobe InDesign and have experience in formatting books suitable for Amazon KDP, IngramSpark and conventional printers.
Before I start typesetting, I will send you up to three typesetting samples so we can agree on a style you are happy with before the book is formatted.
-
Your eBook will differ from your physical book to accommodate the requirements of digital reading devices.
Text and images may be displayed differently, leading to variations in how the content appears.
eBooks also include interactive features such as hyperlinks and adjustable font sizes, which can impact the overall look and feel of the eBook compared to a physical book.
